Lesson 1:
Communications – Email
What is the difference between Webmail and POP3 style mail?
Webmail is an application that is written to be operated over the internet through browsers as no downloaded applications or additional software necessary. This is done through servers.
Post Office Protocol (POP) is another way of retrieving email information. Back then, computers had very limited, low bandwidth access to remote computers, so engineers created POP in order to download copies of emails for offline reading, then remove those mails from the sever. Since POP3 creates local copies of emails and deletes the originals from the server, the emails are tied to that specific machine, making sure only the client can read it.
What is the advantages and disadvantages of e-mail compared with instant messaging?
Advantages:
· Emails are much faster than traditional post.
· Emails can be sent 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
· Can send larger files than IM.
· Many servers and more maintenance means that service is difficult to go down (BBM, a popular IM service has gone down many times.)
· Viruses can be sent in attachments whereas it is harder to get a virus in an IM.
· Delay between messages.
· The mail might not be read by the client.
· Target to junk mail.
· IM are easily more available when there is no computer as most phones already have a IM service provided (BBM and iMessage.)
Who are the main e-mail providers?
1. Gmail
2. Zoho Mail
3. AIM
4. iCloud
5. Hotmail
6. Yahoo
Lesson 2:
The story of Bob and Susan
Personnel
Records
Bob and Susan work in a company. They are called the ‘human
resources.’
His boss is named Frank.
Frank is a good manager and wants to know everything about his
employees so what should Frank do?
His firsts interviews his ‘human resources’ and records the
following into a database:
·
Their IDs
·
Name
·
Date of Birth
·
Family
·
Hours of work
·
Alma mater
Now I know what you are asking: “What will any of this
do?”
Well hypothetical person, this allows the organisation
to:
·
Identify the employee
·
The ability to send its employees emails and
letters.
·
The ability to pay you as information such as work hours are
taken into account
·
Record your attendance
·
Analyse performance
Old Man Jim is against it. He’s been in the joint for 40 years
now and prefers the system of storing all this information in cardboard boxes
and file cabinets.
But this new system allows information to be edited much more
easily and to find data quicker.
Everyone else: 1
Old Man Jim: 0
Question:
Old Man Jimmy wants to write an argument against this system. What are the problems for this system?
Answer:
Can be hacked
If not secure, can be damaged
Loss of jobs (Tesco)
Development may take a long time, depending on amount of employees.
